Sites for New Jersey sports bettors to avoid

Despite the thriving presence of legalized sports betting in NJ, there are still unlicensed offshore operators offering their services to people in the Garden State. We strongly advise against wagering with such companies.

Take a good look at our list of sites to avoid, which features firms that have refused to return customers’ money and others that have run misleading advertising campaigns and rigged games.

Top online sportsbooks in New Jersey

The list of 22 sports betting operators now in business in New Jersey includes all the leading names in an industry that has moved a very long way in a short space of time.

Under New Jersey law, only racetracks and casinos can apply for a sports betting license – each can partner with a maximum of three online sportsbooks.

BetMGM

BetMGM

BetMGM is a casino giant that has evolved impressively to become one of the leaders in the NJ online sports betting space. This process has been accelerated by the expertise delivered by its partner Entain, which owns several leading UK sports betting brands.

BetMGM, whose licensing partner in NJ is Borgata, welcomes new customers with the chance of a bonus bet worth up to $1,000. Several other great promotions lie in wait for those who sign up, along with a successful rewards program.

This brand has significantly upgraded its app in recent years and its mobile platform now has a strong focus on live betting and live streaming. It is also noted for the depth and breadth of the sports on which it offers markets – a real point of difference for New Jersey customers who want to bet on more than merely the Big Four.

Caesars

Caesars

With a hugely familiar brand name in the gambling world and several casinos to its name in Atlantic City, Caesars entered the New Jersey sports betting market with a very high profile.

Its shrewd $4billion acquisition of UK sports betting stalwart William Hill brought on board long expertise in the sector, and bolstered Caesars’ drive to become one of the most recognized and respected US sportsbooks.

Caesars’ licensing partner is Monmouth Park racetrack. Its welcome bonus for new sign-ups is a bet credit generated by a 100% match on your first deposit of up to $1,500, and it follows this up with an impressive range of promotions and an excellent rewards program.

The choice of sports to bet on is good and Caesars has put plenty of effort into making its app as user-friendly as possible for those who prefer to wager on mobile.

WynnBET

WynnBET

WynnBET leveraged its casino history to enter the NJ sports betting market in 2020 through a partnership with Caesars Entertainment. It has a choice of two welcome offers. You can either trigger a $200 bonus in return for a $10 first bet, or take advantage of a 100% match bonus on your first deposit up to a maximum of $1,000. However, the playthrough requirement on the latter is quite high – you need to wager the amount of your deposit 10 times before the bonus funds are unlocked.

WynnBET’s choice of sports is more limited than you will find at many of its rivals. However, it delivers a solid desktop and mobile wagering experience for customers looking to enjoy legalized sports betting in NJ. It also scores very highly for the competitive odds it offers on live and futures markets.

DraftKings

DraftKings

Like its old Daily Fantasy Sports rival FanDuel, DraftKings has moved at top speed to embrace the possibilities of online sports betting in New Jersey and elsewhere. It now features at or near the very top of the table for wagering handle here and in the many other states where it is live.

DraftKings was the first firm to launch online after state officials legalized sports betting in NJ and it retains its reputation as a trail-blazer with the sheer quality of the user experience on both website and app.

Its licensing partner is the Resorts Casino and customers who sign up for DraftKings get both a $50 bonus bet and a deposit match bonus that can be worth up to $1,000 – though the playthrough conditions are surprisingly stringent.

With a sumptuous choice of sports and markets, and a reputation as a go-to destination for betting on big events, it is unlikely DraftKings will relinquish its place near the top of the market any time soon.

FanDuel

FanDuel

FanDuel made its name as one of the foremost supplier of Daily Fantasy Sports games. When the opportunity to move into online sports betting arose, it pivoted with impressive speed to become a leader in that field too.

FanDuel regularly appears at the very top of the table for NJ online sports betting handle. This is only partly explained by the high profile its DFS exploits conferred. FanDuel delivers a supremely user-friendly experience on both its website and app.

Its licensing partner is the Meadowlands, and its welcome bonus to new customers is $200 in Bonus Bets when you wager $5. Regular odds boosts are just one of the features of this sportsbook NJ customers can take advantage of, while FanDuel was a pioneer in offering same-game parlays.

In a congested and highly competitive field, FanDuel has serious claim to being the very best NJ online sportsbook.

FOX Bet

FOX Bet

FOX Bet launched in New Jersey with a license from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement in 2019, thanks to a partnership with Resorts Casino and a merger between Fox Sports and BetStars.

FOX Bet offers new players a $50 bonus bet for signing up. Once you have registered, you must opt-in for the bonus on the promotions page. Otherwise, you won’t receive any rewards.

FOX Bet provides excellent betting features such as cash out on major league events and same game parlays. You can choose to bet on more than 25 different sports, with events like soccer and basketball having thousands of markets each week. FOX Bet also has fast withdrawals compared to other betting sites, with a wide selection of payment methods.

Golden Nugget

Golden Nugget

Golden Nugget Sportsbook launched in New Jersey in February 2019. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement licenses the sportsbook through a deal with Golden Nugget Casino, Atlantic City.

New Jersey players that sign up with Golden Nugget can claim its bet match offer. The sportsbook will match your first wager up to $250 with bonus bets. You can use these bonus bets to wager on sports and withdraw any profits.

Golden Nugget Sportsbook also provides regular promotions. You can use these to bet on its wide variety of markets, including major league sports and niche events. The desktop site and app update very quickly, so any in-play odds will always be up to date.

Barstool Sportsbook

Barstool Sportsbook

Operated by Penn National Gaming in connection with Barstool Sports, Barstool Sportsbook launched in New Jersey in September 2021. The betting site is licensed through its partnership with Freehold Raceway, and provides a unique sports betting experience with its celebrity personalities. You can watch sports events live with these famous people and see their picks for bets to inform your own wagering.

If you register with Barstool in New Jersey, you can claim a new player bonus of up to $1000. Barstool will pay you back with bonus bets if your first wager up to this amount fails. You can use these to wager on sports and withdraw any profits from these bets.

Barstool allows you to bet with its awesome mobile app, which has excellent features such as the slider to let you choose the bets and odds you want easily.

PointsBet

PointsBet

Australian sportsbook PointsBet launched in New Jersey in January 2019 and partners with Meadowlands Racetrack for its land-based license. The betting site has a generous welcome bonus of five $100 bonus bets for each of your first five days of play. You must return to PointsBet five days in a row to get the full value from this promotion.

One of the main draws of PointsBet is its Points Betting feature, which allows you to place wagers on over/under markets for huge potential profits. The more correct you are with Points Betting, the more you win. However, you obviously also lose more for incorrect bets.

PointsBet also provides a variety of promotions, including bonus bets, request a bet, and more. The betting site also supports live streaming of events like soccer and tennis.

TwinSpires

TwinSpires

TwinSpires has evolved into a fully-fledged sportsbook from its online horse racing betting background. It now provides a top sports betting experience in several states, with TwinSpires New Jersey launching in December 2021.

The welcome offer is a bonus bet of up to $1,000. You can enjoy betting on a good range of sports, from the main American leagues to sports and events from around the world.

With competitive odds and a well-designed app, TwinSpires has a lot to offer for both sports and horse racing betting.

Popular sports to bet on in New Jersey

As the 11th most populous state in the USA, you might expect New Jersey to have more than one representative in the Big Four sports. However, the presence of some iconic New York sports names in close proximity ensures that there is plenty for sports fans in the Garden State to watch - and to bet on.

Football

Football

Football is the most popular sport across the USA and the interest in it from both a spectating and wagering perspective is enormous.

New Jersey may not technically have a team in the NFL, but both the New York Giants and the New York Jets play their home matches at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. As well as attracting numerous fans across the Hudson, both sides command significant support in New Jersey – especially the Jets.

The Jets haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1968, and the Giants have won four in that time. But whenever NJ sports betting sites carry football markets, you can expect serious levels of investment by local fans.

Basketball

Basketball

Basketball is another sport with a coast-to-coast fan base, ensuring that it is a popular betting medium at every sportsbook NJ hosts.

The state has not been home to an NBA team since 2012, when the Nets decamped to Brooklyn. But there are plenty of big-name sides in the vicinity, and both the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers pull in plenty of support from New Jersey fans.

Basketball has become one of the favorite sports with betting enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy an in-play wager which means it will always have a high profile on New Jersey sports betting sites.

Baseball

Baseball

Even without the presence of an MLB team within its borders, NJ sports betting sites will always give plenty of prominence to baseball.

This is driven partly by the perennial popularity of a sport still known as America’s Game, and partly by the presence close by of some historic franchises.

The New York Yankees, arguably the biggest brand name in US sports, attract plenty of support from New Jersey fans – about a quarter of the tickets at Yankee Stadium are bought by people based to the west of the Hudson. Further south in the state, the Philadelphia Phillies count plenty of New Jerseyites among their fan base.

Hockey

Hockey

The New Jersey Devils are the only Big Four team to feature the state’s name. Since they moved here from Colorado in 1982, they have brought the Stanley Cup to New Jersey three times, as well as winning five conference championships.

The Devils enjoy fierce rivalries with the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers, which adds spice to their encounters and also ensures a high level of betting interest in those games, and NHL clashes in general.

NJ sports betting sites carry extensive markets on NHL games, as well as odds from the best leagues in Europe.

NCAA football

NCAA football

The Princeton Tigers compete in the Ivy League conference, while the Scarlet Knights from Rutgers University in New Brunswick play in the Big Ten. That guarantees a great deal of interest in college football in New Jersey.

However, perhaps surprisingly in a state that so willingly embraced the possibilities of sports betting, there are stringent restrictions on betting on college football.

NJ sportsbooks are not allowed to offer market on games taking place in the state, or on any event involving a team based here. Additionally, no prop bets on college players can be taken.

NCAA basketball

NCAA basketball

College basketball attracts serious levels of attention among sports fans in New Jersey. Princeton’s men’s and women’s teams are among the best-known and most powerful teams in the Ivy League conference, while Seton Hall, Monmouth and Rutgers also have impressive basketball programs.

Remember, though, that you will not be able to place wagers on any of their games, even those played outside the state. This also applies to any player props. The voters of New Jersey rejected an attempt to relax these restrictions as recently as November 2021.

Golf

Golf

Baltusrol, located in Springfield in the western suburbs of Newark, regularly hosts the US Open and is known as one of the most challenging venues for the championship. Golf is big business in New Jersey, which is home to nearly 300 clubs.

That ensures a high profile for the sport when it comes to wagering at NJ sports betting sites. Golf lends itself naturally to sports betting; the tournaments last four days, there are large numbers of players to bet on and there are also a host of opportunities to place in-play wagers and prop bets.

Tennis

Tennis

With Flushing Meadows located in Queens, just a few miles across the Hudson, New Jersey tennis fans have access to the venue of the US Open, one of the four grand slam tournaments on the global tennis calendar.

Tennis is a sport that, like basketball, has gained a higher profile in recent years thanks to the growing popularity in live betting. With its frequent breaks in play, and relatively long matches, tennis offers plenty of opportunities to wager during the action. As a result, New Jersey sports betting sites carry a steady offering of markets relating to tennis events around the world.

NASCAR

NASCAR

NASCAR is the most popular American motorsport series in a country known for its love of the car. With a regular schedule of events across the nation, it attracts a high level of interest throughout the year – a popularity that is reflected at NJ sports betting sites.

As well as race lines, sportsbooks carry extensive driver props, including head-to-head match bets and group match-ups.

New Jersey is home to Wall Stadium, which hosts the annual 150-lap Turkey Derby and the Garden State Classic over 125 laps.

UFC

UFC

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has gained millions of followers in the last couple of decades. Big fight nights draw huge attendances and even bigger TV audiences.

New Jersey has been one of the states that has hosted the most UFC events outside Las Vegas, with cards staged in Atlantic City and at Newark and East Rutherford.

As a result, interest is high in the Garden State and NJ sportsbooks carry extensive markets on upcoming UFC events. These include a broad selection of fight lines and parlays and a massive number of props on each bout on the bill.

Bet types and markets

The intense competition for custom in a marketplace with more than 20 online sports betting licenses has several consequences. One is that, when you sign up with the best NJ online sportsbook for you, you are guaranteed to find an extensive choice of sports to bet on – and a wide range of ways to place your wager.

As you might guess, these are bets with one stake on a single outcome. So if you reckon the New Jersey Devils are a lock to win their next NHL game, you can place a wager on that outcome, or on one of the other markets offered on the game. Nothing more – and nothing less. And you will know exactly how much you stand to win.

Bonuses and promotions

One of the best ways for any NJ sports betting site to attract potential customers – and to ensure their ongoing loyalty – is by offering bonuses that add extra value to the wagering experience. It’s essential to have a tempting welcome bonus to lure players through the door, but it’s equally important to have regular promotions once they are on the premises.

Bonus Bonus Description
Welcome bonus
The reward for opening an account can come in various forms, but it has to offer the prospect of a pleasant start to your time with an NJ sports betting site. Whether it’s a deposit match, an extra bet or another form of bonus, it must be right for you.
No-deposit bonus
Some NJ online sports betting sites thank you for registering with them by placing money in your account even before you have made a deposit. It may be $10, $50 or $100 – but when it happens your balance is in credit without you placing a bet.
Bonus bets
Also called a "risk-free bet" - this is one of the most common welcome bonuses. Not only is it easy to understand, it offers a tempting prospect – a bet with no downside. If your first wager wins, you receive a payout. But if it loses, you get your stake back as a bonus bet or site credit.
Cashback
The most common form of cashback is with parlay insurance. Instead of you losing everything when one of the legs in your parlay lets you down, this feature means you receive your initial stake back as a bonus bet.
Enhanced odds
Odds boosts are a great way to give existing customers an extra bit of value on certain bets. Many NJ online sports betting operators offer such boosts so frequently that they have their own dedicated section on the website or app.
Loyalty offers
Another way of extracting an extra slice of value from your wagering experience is through offers and programs that recognize your loyalty and dedication. This can be through a rewards program or a VIP scheme.

Legal sports betting in New Jersey

The story of legalized sports betting in NJ is fascinating, given the Garden State’s prominent role in changing the face of gambling in the USA for ever. The road to the legalization of New Jersey sports betting began in 2012 when state governor Chris Christie signed a law permitting it following a voter referendum.

There was stiff opposition from the NCAA and several major leagues, who argued such a move contravened the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992.

Initially, the courts held in favor of the leagues but New Jersey took the fight all the way to the top. In May 2018 the US Supreme Court ruled that PASPA was unconstitutional, a decision that opened the door for states to legalize sports betting.

Within a month Phil Murphy, the state’s new governor, signed a bill legalizing sports betting at casinos and racetracks – and allowing those establishments to apply for online betting licenses. By August 2018, the first NJ sports betting operation was launched.

By February 2022 there were 22 companies offering New Jersey sports betting. Apart from a lull during the Covid-19 pandemic, the sports betting handle has followed an inexorably upward trajectory here since PASPA was thrown out.

Responsible gaming in New Jersey

Given its long history of casino gambling, it is no surprise to learn that New Jersey takes the need to encourage responsible gaming at all times very seriously. Indeed, a specific portion of every license fee is directly dedicated to this purpose. That means the state can help people for whom gambling becomes a problem. We suggest these key principles will help with responsible gambling:

Never place a bet when you are emotional or upset, or have been drinking

Never spend more money on gambling than you can afford to lose

Seek help if you fear that you are no longer in control of your sports betting
