Casinos you should avoid

We only recommend the best online casinos. Avoid these unsafe sites that target UK players. All the recent feedback we’ve discovered about them has been negative:

A closer look at our top 5 recommendations

Every month we refresh our list of top casinos in the UK. Here’s a closer look at why we selected these casinos for June:

1. Pub Casino — Highest payout rate in the UK

Pub Casino UK screenshots

Pros

Highest payout rate according to our June data

Withdrawals can take just 3 hours

Cons

No free spins or cashback in the welcome bonus

Check out our full Pub Casino review.

Who doesn’t love a trip to the pub?

Pub Casino is number one on our shortlist of the best UK online casinos. This is thanks to the overall experience our casino review team had when using the site.

Pub had the highest return to player of any UK casino in June. This alone is a great reason to open an account but it also has 1,600+ games, including our UK favourites like Rainbow Riches and Starburst.

It offers customer support via phone, and there's also a sports betting section on the site if you fancy a flutter on your favourite team. No matter what you're looking for, Pub Casino has got you covered.

👨‍💻 User review: “Just received payment it took only a few hours staff seemed honest and genuine.” 5/5

Mr Benjamin Knowles - Trustpilot review, 10th June, 2024

💡 Editor’s insight: "Pub Casino has all the games you need, and I’m a big fan of the Premier League and Aston Villa too, so I love the fact that there is a sports betting option. Withdrawals are very quick, so if you like to get your winnings fast, it’s worth checking out."

2. All British Casino — UK casino with all-British support staff

All British Casino screenshots

Pros

✅ Search tool makes finding games easy

✅ British staff and customer support

Cons

❌ Phone support isn't 24/7

Read our All British Casino review

All British Casino has a British support team, with real human assistance available via phone 18 hours a day.

As part of our review of All British Casino, we tested the phone line and our query about payment methods was answered in less than three minutes.

The site has a good selection of 1,200+ games. That's around 400 fewer than Pub Casino, but still plenty to keep you entertained. All British pride themselves on working with the best game developers including some of our favourites Pragmatic Play, Hacksaw Gaming and Play'n GO to name a few.

🧑‍💻 User review: “Fast withdrawals, friendly staff and a great selection of games. I would deffo recommend playing at this casino” 5/5

Mathew Marsden - Trustpilot review, 9th May, 2024

3. Magic Red Casino — Established UK brand

Magic Red casino screenshots

Pros

✅ 10% cashback available on live casino games

✅ eCOGRA approved which guarantees fair games

Cons

❌ Only around 1,000 games

Read our full Magic Red Casino review

Magic Red has been operating for 10 years now, and this longevity is a big reason why it’s no.3 on our list. Our team sees lots of new casinos come and go, so we know it is doing something right.

A big reason UK players have remained devoted to the casino is promotions like Magic Spins Tuesday. By depositing £20 or more on a Tuesday, players receive free spins on Starburst, a fantastic way to kick off the week. This offer has been a hit among players seeking extra value from their deposits.

👩‍💻 User review: “No issues at all. Only signed up yesterday won a nice sum of money. Straight in my bank today.”

Charmaine Hall, Trustpilot review, 17th April, 2024 5/5 ⭐

💡 Editor’s insight: "Magic Red is approved by eCOGRA, one of the leading independent testing agencies for casinos. This means the games at Magic Red are fair and genuinely random."

William McMaster, 12th June, 2024

Casino.org rating: 4.8/5 ⭐

4. Grand Ivy Casino — Fantastic welcome bonus

Grand Ivy Casino screenshots

Pros

✅ Market leading welcome bonus

✅ Top live dealer selection

Cons

❌ No phone support

Read our Grand Ivy Casino review

Grand Ivy Casino ranks at no.4 in the best UK casinos mainly because it has one of our favourite welcome bonus offers on the market. You can earn up to £300 and 75 bonus spins with a wagering requirement of just 35x.

The average UK casino welcome bonus is £100 with 40x wagering requirements. So, Grand Ivy is among the most generous, and it has good wagering requirements, which is always something we look for. It also has an amazing selection of live casino games, with more than 350 to choose from.

👩‍💻 User review: “Whole process from start to finish has been great! Thanks guys 100% recommend!”

Sam G, Trustpilot review, 10th March, 2024 5/5 ⭐

💡 Editor’s insight: "The Grand Ivy welcome bonus is one of the biggest and the 35x wagering requirements are slightly above the UK average. If you’re looking for a good bonus, this one is worth trying."

Adam Volz, 14th June, 2024

Casino.org rating: 4.4/5 ⭐

5. Betway casino — Almost two decades of UK casino experience

Betway Casino UK screenshots

Pros

✅ 98.28% payout rate in our data

✅ High-quality live casino games

Cons

❌ Welcome bonus is free spins only

Read our Betway casino review

Betway is a well-known brand to UK sports and casino fans, thanks to their many sponsorships with sports teams and events. They have sponsored Premier League clubs West Ham and Arsenal, and over 4000 horse races across the country.

The game library has just 450 games. This is much less than Pub Casino’s 1,600 or Grand Ivy’s 3,000. But our review team still rated them highly because they offer top slot games like Gates of Olympus and Book of Dead.

A £10 first bet will qualify you for a 125 free spin welcome offer on Big Bass Bonanza. This is above the UK average of 100 free spins. And you get to enjoy a popular slot by Pragmatic Play.

👩‍💻 User review: “Very fast and trustworthy site, you just need to be patient.” 5/5 ⭐

Daniel Butterfield, Trustpilot review, 9th May, 2024

💡 Editor’s insight: The welcome offer is only for free spins, so if you aren't a fan of slots, I recommend looking elsewhere.

The best online casinos in the UK by type

Every casino specialisies in different areas and has strengths and weaknesses. Here are our team’s top recommendations based on the different types of casino in the UK:

Slots casinos 🎰

Slots are the most popular type of online casino game, so the competition is tough. These UK casinos stand out from the crowd:

Dream Vegas

Dream Vegas has over 2,500 slot games available. That’s twice as many as other top UK casinos like All British or Pub Casino. There is a huge amount of variation available in the slot library, and you can find any type of game including Blueprint Gaming’s Jackpot King slots, and Pragmatic Play’s Drops & Wins.

Dream Vegas boasts games from over 100 software providers, including industry leaders like Play'n GO and NetEnt, so you’ll always be able to find high quality games.

Promotions for slots players:

  • Welcome bonus of £300 + 150 bonus spins on Starburst or Aloha
  • Weekly chance to win a share of £500

PlayOJO Casino

PlayOJO Casino stands out in the crowded slots market because of the unique welcome bonus it offers. You can earn 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza with just a £10 deposit. There are no wagering requirements either, so whatever you win you keep. This takes this offer from good to outstanding.

PlayOJO also has an amazing library of 1,500 slots from leading providers including Book of Dead by Play'n GO, Money Train 4 by Relax Gaming and Sweet Bonanza and Big Bass Splash by Pragmatic Play.

Promotions for slots players:

  • 80 free spins on your first deposit
  • OJO Specials for existing customer including the OJO Wheel which gives you the chance to earn free spins on your favourite games

Roulette casinos 🟥⬛

Roulette is a casino classic, but online variations have given this table game a new level of excitement. Here are the best roulette casinos in the UK:

LeoVegas

LeoVegas has one of the biggest libraries for roulette available in the UK. There are over 80 types of roulette available, and you can play anything from the traditional, live version, to a Who Wants To Be A Millionaire version.

If playing live roulette is your thing, Leo Vegas has a welcome offer of up to £56 in chips that you can use at the live casino.

Promotions for roulette players:

  • Up to £50 plus £6

Betway casino

Betway is a great place to play roulette online because of the number of variations available. The site has over 40 versions of the game, including Multifire Roulette, Live Diamond Rush Roulette, and even Live Betway Football Roulette. This is more than double other leading UK casino sites like Grand Ivy Casino and Pub Casino.

You can also play 24/7 live roulette by Authentic Gaming, an industry leading live casino games provider. There is a £50 welcome bonus available for live casino, which is another great reason to play roulette at Betway.

Promotions for roulette players:

  • £50 live casino welcome bonus
  • Weekly casino bonuses of up to £50

Blackjack casinos ♠️

Blackjack is one of the most popular online casino games in the UK. These are some of the leading casinos that offer it:

Grand Ivy Casino

Grand Ivy has a selection of 59 blackjack variations in its game library. Most UK casino sites like Mr Mega and All British Casino have between 10 and 20 blackjack games in total, but Grand Ivy has over 20 live versions. You can play against live dealers in Blackjack London by On Air, Live Blackjack by Evolution Gaming and One Blackjack by Pragmatic.

Grand Ivy also offers a generous £300 welcome bonus that includes 25 bonus spins on Starburst. If you enjoy slots it’s an amazing offer but even if you just used the bonus on blackjack, it’s worth taking as it has wagering requirements of 35x, which is slightly better than the average of 40x at most UK casinos.

Promotions for blackjack players:

  • £300 plus 25 bonus spins welcome offer
  • Regular cash giveaways including the chance to win £500 every week

HeySpin

HeySpin is a solid choice for blackjack players in the UK because there are 71 versions of the game available on the site. You can play standard single hand blackjack against a computer dealer, or live speed blackjack. If you love blackjack but want to mix things up a little, HeySpin is worth a try.

The welcome bonus offer is worse than Grand Ivy, as it’s up to £50 only but it also includes 100 free spins on Starburst. So, if you like playing slots as well, it might be worth taking, but if you only want to play blackjack, we recommend Grand Ivy Casino.

Promotions for blackjack players:

  • £50 plus 100 free spins welcome offer

Mobile casinos 📱

Nearly all online casinos are optimised for mobile play, but some do it better than others and offer their customers a downloadable app. Here are our favourites:

PlayOJO

PlayOJO gives players the chance to maximise their mobile experience with their app. Unlike mobile versions of a desktop website, apps are quicker, more reliable, have more personalisation and a better user experience overall.

Having an app isn’t unique in the UK casino market, other top casinos like Magic Red and Betway have them too. But PlayOJO is the highest rated by punters. It has a 4.5/5 rating from ‎14,269 reviews on the App Store and 4/5 from 10,547 votes on Google Play, which is incredible. So, if you’re looking to play casino games on the go, you can’t beat PlayOJO.

LeoVegas

Like PlayOJO, the quality of the LeoVegas app is backed up by its reviews from real users. It has a 4.2/5 rating from ‎5,219 votes on Google Play and 4.8/5 from 85 reviews on the App Store.

This doesn’t match the incredible number of reviews that PlayOJO has, which is why we’d recommend that first. But it does show that the app is enjoyed by UK casino fans, so if you are looking for an alternative to PlayOJO, LeoVegas is a great bet.

Real money casinos 💷

You have two options at online casinos. You can either play for free, or deposit money and play for real. These UK real money casinos impressed our team the most:

Pub Casino

Pub Casino had one of the highest payout rates of any casino in the UK according to our data in June. This means that players at Pub Casino win more than other similair sites like Betway or Mr Mega.

There are also 8 different payment methods you can use on the site, including PayPal, Visa and Mastercard. So, it’s easy to get your money onto the site and start making real bets straight away.

Magic Red Casino

Magic Red gives players a range of amazing promotions which make a real difference in real money betting. For example, at Magic Red, you can earn 10% cashback on casino games on Saturdays and Sundays.

If you’re planning to play for real money at the weekend, Magic Red is a solid choice.

New UK casino sites 🆕

There are hundreds of UK casino sites available, and they can be pretty similair. We keep an eye on any new casinos in the UK because they can offer a unique experience. This is the best one available:

Pub Casino

Pub Casino was established in 2023, making it one of the freshest new players in the UK.

Casino.org's expert review process

Since 1995, Casino.org has been reviewing casinos, and reporting on the latest news in gambling worldwide. Our team has decades of experience playing casino games, working for casino operators, and reviewing casinos.

Here’s what we do before we make any recommendations:

  • 1

    Check for a UKGC licence

The first thing our expert team does when looking at new casino is check for a valid license issued by the UK Gambling Commission. If a casino doesn’t have that, we don’t go any further. Every site we recommend is 100% legal and will protect your data online.

  • 2

Open an account at the casino

We sign up to the casino and claim the bonuses you'll find on Casino.org. This enables us to experience what playing at the casino is like, so our tests and reviews are accurate to you.

  • 3

    Conduct a full casino audit

We use our 25-step review process to rate all aspects of the casino, from the welcome bonus and games available, to the customer support details. We rate each part of the casino on a predetermined scoring criteria, then give it an overall score.

  • 4

Play through wagering requirements and make a withdrawal

As part of our review, we play through the wagering requirements in the bonus to make sure everything is as described in the terms. Finally, we withdraw any winnings to check how quick and reliable they are.

Meet our expert reviewers

How we rate the best UK online casinos

Before we recommend any casino, we rate it by completing our 25-step review process. These are the key areas we look at, and the casinos that stand out:

  • Games and software

The average UK casino has about 1,000 games from 20 providers. But, some have much more. We look at the quality of the games and software providers that a casino offers. The most popular software providers in the UK are Pragmatic Play, Yggdrasil, Hacksaw Gaming, and Playtech. Casinos get higher ratings if they offer games from these studios. Grand Ivy Casino is a leader in this field. It has a library of 3,000 games from over 100 top software providers. So, it offers the best choice and quality. Betway is at the other end of the scale, as it offers just 450 games. They still offer high games and industry leading slots like Rainbow Riches and Starburst, there is just less variation.

  • Bonuses and promotions

In the UK, casino welcome bonuses are usually £100-200. They have wagering requirements of 30 to 40 times the bonus. Some casinos offer free spins alongside or instead of a cash bonus. The average free spins offer is 100 spins on a slot game like Fire Joker or Starburst. Dream Vegas offer up to £300 and 150 free spins, which is above the market average for both bonuses. The wagering requirements are 35x, which is also highly competitive.

  • Banking and money

Most UK casino sites offer about 10 payment methods. The most common are Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, and bank transfer. Withdrawal times take between 1-4 days at most UK casinos, but lots of sites process winnings a lot faster. Kaiser Slots offers a market leading 18 payment methods, including PayPal. PlayOJO has just 5 options, but does accept the most common ones, so it shouldn't be an issue for most players.

  • Customer care

Top online casinos offer customer support through several channels. In the UK, it’s commonplace for casinos to have live chat, phone and email options. Live chat agents are usually available 24/7, but phone lines often have limited hours. Our review team scored Pub Casino 5/5 for their customer support thanks to 24/7 live chat, 24-hour response time on email and a phone line open from 7am to midnight.

  • Mobile experience

Any top casino should have a fully optimised mobile version of their site, and at least 90% of games should be playable. Most casinos also offer downloadable apps to enhance players’ experiences. PlayOJO has an industry leading app and one of the top-rated casino apps on the App Store and Google Play. Editor's insight: I love the PlayOJO app, but we're spoiled for choice in the UK. LeoVegas, All British Casino, Virgin Games, and Betway all have highly rated apps that are packed with top games.

  • UK focused

We consider what matters most to UK players. We know that PayPal is one of the most popular deposit methods at casinos in the UK and slots are the most played game. So, casinos get extra points for catering to these preferences.  We also ensure that the site and customer support is available in English, and that you can deposit in pounds. All British Casino's UK based customer support team gives them an edge over competitors.

  • Security and trust

All of the best online casinos in the UK have valid licences from the UK Gambling Commission. To get a licence they will have high levels of security, data protection and operate in a fair way, so you can trust them.

We also consider what matters most to UK players. We know that PayPal is one of the most popular deposit methods at casinos in the UK and slots are the most played game. So, casinos get extra points for catering to these preferences.

Hannah Cutajar

Expert insight: How to choose the best casino for you

Hannah Cutajar, Head of Gaming

"With our recommendations, you know that you will be playing at one of the best online casinos in the UK. But having a great experience at a casino is still about personal preference. Be clear on what you want at a casino. If you’re looking for the biggest welcome bonuses, we recommend Grand Ivy Casino or Dream Vegas, which both offer £300 plus free spins. If you’re looking for a casino that accept deposits in PayPal we recommend Pub Casino or All British Casino. Decide what's most important to you, check our reviews then make your choice!"

Welcome bonuses and other promotions at casino sites

The best casino sites have the best bonuses. In the UK, average welcome bonuses are between £100 and £200, and most casinos run weekly promos for existing customers too. The most popular types of online casino bonuses are:

Welcome bonus

Welcome bonus

A welcome bonus is any offer made exclusively to new players at UK casinos. They take many forms and have various terms and condition, for example, you could get a £100 cash bonus, plus free spins. Our favourite welcome bonus is Dream Vegas’ £300 and 150 free spins with 35x wagering requirement.

Deposit match bonus

Deposit match bonus

A deposit match bonus is when a casino will match the amount you deposit. In a 100% match up to £100, if you deposit £100, you'll be given another £100 in bonus wagering funds. One of the best deposit match bonuses available at the moment is Temple Nile’s 100% up to £1500 with 40x wagering requirements.

No deposit bonuses

No deposit bonuses

A no deposit bonus is where a casino offers a small bet credit simply for registering an account. This type of promotion is less common, though some top UK online casinos will offer it from time to time. They typically offer a small amount of money (around £5-10) when you register. You may need to make a deposit before you can withdraw your winnings.

Live casino promotions

Live casino promotions

Like cashback offers, live casino offers are not super common, especially for new players. However, they do exist. Betway is offering a live casino bonus of up to £50 for new players. So, if you want the atmosphere of a real casino from your sofa, check that one out.

Cashback offers

Cashback offers

If a player loses their first deposit at a casino, a cashback offer refunds a percentage of their losses into their wallet. Then, they can use it to keep enjoying their favourite games. All British Casino currently offers 10% cashback as part of their welcome bonus.

Promo codes

Promo codes

Some UK casino sites send out promotions which are triggered with bonus codes, although it’s not very common. It is more often seen for sports betting promotions, and at casinos in the US. However, if there are any available, we add them next to the bonus info when reviewing a casino.

Free spins bonuses

Free spins bonuses

Free spins are where a casino site offers a free turn on a slot game. These free spin bonuses can be part of a welcome package or a loyalty reward for existing players and are available on slot games that are selected by the casino. PlayOJO is one casino that goes all-in on this bonus type. They offer 80 free spins as part of their welcome package.

Reload bonus

Reload bonus

Reload bonuses are like smaller deposit matches. They 'reload' a player's balance with extra funds. The amount is based on the size of their deposit. Where a welcome deposit match may be a 150% match up to £300, a reload bonus is more likely to look like 25% up to £50. The term 'reload' is also sometimes used to refer to cashback offers, so make sure you check the Ts and Cs for clarification.

Refer-a-friend bonuses

Refer-a-friend bonuses

Some casinos offer players special links or codes tied to their account. When other players sign up with that link or code and meet some rules (e.g., £20 of wagering), both the referrer and the referee get a bonus. It can be free spins or cash. This is not an infinite bonus hack - most casinos cap players at approximately five referrals.

Common payment methods at online casinos

All online casinos offer different options for players to make deposits. Some payment methods are deposit-only, and some allow both deposits and withdrawals. What’s available varies from casino to casino, but these are the most common in the UK:

ian-zerafa-author-photo.jpeg

Expert insight: Choosing the right payment method

Ian Zerafa, Associate Gaming Specialist

"Some casinos welcome bonuses are only eligible on certain payment methods. Deposits with e-wallets like Skrill and Neteller are the most commonly excluded. Also, because of UK gambling regulations, neither credit cards nor cryptocurrency options like Bitcoin, Litecoin or Ethereum are accepted as payment methods at any online casinos in the UK."

In-person casinos in the UK

Thanks to the long history of gambling in the UK, casino fans aren't just limited to playing online. The Casino Club in Port Talbot, Wales became the first licenced casino in the UK in 1961 following the introduction of the Betting and Gaming Act in 1960. In 2023, there were 144 in-person casinos operating in the UK. London is home to most of these (54), while Grosvenor is the largest operator and has 53 casinos across the country.

Lets take a closer look at some of the most notable casinos in the UK:

Hippodrome - London

The 93,000 square-foot Hippodrome is the largest casino in the UK and has been operating as an entertainment venue since 1900. It’s open 24/7 and offers six floors of gaming action.

Real life vs online casinos

If you're not sure whether to join an online casino, or go to your local in-person one, both have their pros and cons. If you’re not sure which one suits you best, consider these factors:

In-person casinos

Socialise with friends

Visit bars and restaurants at the casino

Atmosphere

Can be intimidating for beginners

Online casinos

Access to welcome bonuses and promotions

Play anywhere, anytime

UK gambling laws and legislation

Gambling is legal in Britain, but it is heavily regulated. This is to protect players, prevent children gambling, and to reduce fraud and money laundering. All gambling activities are restricted to adults aged 18 and over except for football pools, which are available to people aged 16 and over. Lets take a close look at the timeline of gambling regulation in the UK:

The Betting and Gaming Act (1960)

This act of parliament legalised betting for small sums on games such as bridge. It also allowed betting shops to be opened and to gain licences. Between 1961 and 1965, 16,000 licences were granted to operators. The act had a good impact on the industry. But it saw the start of a big decline for greyhound tracks.

The Gambling Act (2005)

The Gambling Act saw the creation of the UK Gambling Commission, the new regulatory body for all gambling in the UK. Online casinos were also regulated for the first time. This allowed punters to take legal action against any operator that did not pay out winnings, among other things.

Other regulation

In 2020, the use of credit cards was banned at UK casino sites. This was done to reduce the risk of unsafe practices, as it is deemed that betting on credit is too great a risk.

In 2023, a white paper was introduced with many new proposals to further regulate the industry. These included:

  • Affordability checks
  • A consultation on stake limits
  • Creation of a gambling ombudsman for dispute resolution
  • Advertising measures
  • Tackling the black market

In February 2024, the UK Government said it would act on the white paper's suggestion and create maximum stake limits for online slots. From September 2024, people aged 18-24 will be limited to £2 per spin and over-25s £5 per spin.

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC)

The UK Gambling Commission regulates commercial gambling in the UK. It issues licences to any gambling company that wants to legally operate in the country. It oversees all regulations for casino sites and in-person casinos and bookmakers.

For online gambling, it covers advertising, payments, security, and welcome bonus rules. It also covers customer relations and the anti-money-laundering measures required on sites. The overall aim of the commission is to make gambling safe and enjoyable for everyone. It also focuses on ensuring that vulnerable people are not at risk of problem gambling and its harms.

Any of the UK casino sites we've recommended on this page are licenced by the UKGC. We only recommend licenced sites as they are legal, and adhere to the high standards set by regulators in the UK.
