Sites for Arizona bettors to avoid

With so many of the leading operators now offering legal online sports betting, Arizona enthusiasts have plenty of choice. We strongly recommend you use these brands, rather than any unregulated offshore firms. Many of these appear on our list of sites to avoid for various reasons. These include poor service to players, including some who have had problems securing their payouts.

Top online sportsbooks in Arizona

Competition for custom in Arizona is intense, and there are plenty of options that online sports betting fans can access. Most of the leading names in the digital wagering industry are now vying for players here.

BetMGM

BetMGM

BetMGM has moved fast in recent years to establish its position among the top sports betting brands. And it was no surprise that this was one of the first operators to go live in September 2021.

This is a business that has fused its parent company’s status as a casino giant with the sports betting expertise of UK megabrand Entain to impressive effect. The BetMGM sportsbook is superb, with an outstanding user experience and a vast range of sports and markets to bet on. New customers in Arizona qualify for a bonus bet of up to $1,000, and there are plenty more offers with a great rewards program to savor.

The laws covering online sports betting in Arizona allow companies to apply for a license if they are partners of a tribal casino or a professional sports organization. BetMGM cover both bases, as a partner of the Arizona Cardinals and the Gila River Hotels & Casinos.

Caesars

Caesars

Caesars is another brand that has pivoted expertly to build on its existing stature as a major casino name and create an outstanding sportsbook. It was helped in this process by the acquisition of leading UK brand William Hill, which had already gained a foothold in the US market.

Players enjoy the Caesars sportsbook for the breadth of its sports coverage, its high-class rewards program and the quality of the user experience. Regular bettors also enjoy its highly competitive odds across many sports. There are plenty of bonuses to be enjoyed, including a welcome offer on your first bet of up to $1,100.

Caesars’ progress in the sports betting space has been characterized by speed and agility, and it was one of the first brands to market when legal sports betting in Arizona launched. Its partner is the Arizona Diamondbacks.

DraftKings

DraftKings

It was no surprise to see that DraftKings was one of the first brands to offer sports betting in Arizona once the legal market launched in September 2021.

DraftKings has been in the vanguard of new sportsbooks in a host of states. In this it has been helped by its reputation for living at the cutting edge of digital innovation, as well as the high profile it occupied already with American sports fans thanks to its years at the top of the Daily Fantasy Sports tree. It launched in Arizona through a partnership with TPC Scottsdale.

DraftKings is enjoyed by sports bettors for the quality of its user experience on both desktop and mobile devices. Its betting app is particularly highly rated. You will also find a high level of personalization here; as the platform learns about your preferred wagers, it offers bets suited to your style and taste as soon as you sign in.

FanDuel

FanDuel

FanDuel, like its old Daily Fantasy Sports rival DraftKings, has moved swiftly and surely in recent years to claim a place at the summit of US online sports betting. It also launched as early as possible in Arizona thanks to its partnership with the Phoenix Suns.

Arizona sports betting customers enjoy an outstanding wagering experience on both the website and app. Its user-friendly nature makes it an ideal destination for novice bettors, while more experienced players appreciate the numerous opportunities for live wagering.

The wide choice of sports available, and the extensive selection of markets on each, is also a strong point in FanDuel’s favor, as is the range of bonuses on offer. This begins with $200 in Bonus Bets when you wager $5.

BetRivers

BetRivers

BetRivers is live in a host of states and is known for its outstanding desktop website, quick payouts and range of tempting bonuses. This is another brand with a history in online gaming through its parent company, Rush Street Interactive.

BetRivers has been offering Arizona sports betting services since October 2021, thanks to a partnership with the Arizona Rattlers, the six-time indoor football champions.

The first offer available is a 100% deposit match up to a limit of $250, and many players also enjoy the iRush Rewards program, which offers great rewards for regular visitors.

BetRivers has worked hard to establish itself as one of the leading online betting destinations in Arizona and elsewhere, and the quality of the wagering experience suggests it deserves its reputation as one of the best in the business.

Unibet

Unibet

Unibet comes to the US betting scene with a formidable reputation. It rose quickly through the ranks of UK wagering firms following its 1997 launch and has customers in dozens of countries across the world. It’s live in several US states and popular with players despite not being a local brand, thanks to the excellence of its sports betting offering.

As well as a wide range of sports to bet on, Unibet also delivers an extensive range of superb bonuses. New customers in Arizona qualify for a bonus bet of up to $500, and this is followed up by boosts and promotions on an impressively regular basis.

Unibet was among the many firms offering sports betting fans in Arizona a chance to wager as soon as the legal market was launched in September 2021. Its partner here is the Fort Yuma-Quechan Tribe.

Barstool

Barstool

Barstool roared away from the start line in Arizona at the earliest possible date, which is highly appropriate for a brand whose partner is NASCAR.

Unlike many of its rivals, with their histories in sports betting or casinos, Barstool made its name as a provider of sports content with an edgy, controversial twist. It continues to offer plenty of outspoken opinion pieces with its online betting offering, which gives it a fresh and different feel.

Visitors to the Barstool sportsbook find a good selection of sports on the website and app. There is a strong emphasis on fun and the user experience is highly regarded by fans of the brand.

There are plenty of bonuses and promotions and, as well as extra play and other betting-related rewards, you can also grab the chance to win branded merchandise.

TwinSpires

TwinSpires

TwinSpires made its name as the leading provider of online horse racing betting, and is still regarded as the top racebook in the USA. However, it has since evolved to offer a sportsbook as well – and the experience of bettors in several states suggests the brand has done an excellent job. Thanks to its partnership with the Tonto Apache Tribe, TwinSpires began offering Arizona sports betting services in September 2021.

This is a brand that stands comparison with some of its bigger name rivals. Its usual welcome offer is an initial bonus bet of up to $1,000, and the breadth of its sports coverage is impressive. As well as the main American leagues, there are plenty of opportunities to wager on less prominent sports, and events around the world.

The odds are competitive, the app is very highly regarded – and if you enjoy wagering on horses as well as your other favorite sports, you are definitely in the right place.

WynnBET

WynnBET

WynnBET is a name more usually associated with casinos, and the company was slower than some of its rivals to pivot into the sports betting space. However, it was quick enough to get off the mark in Arizona in September 2021, thanks to its partnership with the San Carlos Apache Tribe.

WynnBET consciously focuses on a narrower band of sports than many of its competitors. However, the service it provides to people who want to wager on leading American sports is extremely good. The odds are highly competitive, and the mobile-first approach is evidenced by an excellent app.

New customers can take advantage of a solid offer that rewards a deposit of at least $50 with $200 in extra bets, and committed visitors to the sportsbook will find regular odds boosts.

Betfred

Betfred

Betfred is one of the many challenger brands that carved out a niche in the ultra-competitive UK sports betting space in recent decades. It has now set its sights on repeating that feat in the USA – and Arizona is one of about half a dozen states so far where the sportsbook has gone live. Its partner is the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation.

All the years of experience behind this brand have been poured into its Arizona sports betting platform. New customers receive a welcome offer of a bonus bet worth up to $500, and there are plenty more offers to follow that.

Betfred is a brand with great potential. It offers excellent odds, a broad range of sports and an excellent user experience on both website and app. It’s particularly well liked by NFL fans for the generosity of its odds on the biggest sport in the US.

Popular sports to bet on in Arizona

When it comes to top-level action, Arizona sports betting fans are spoiled for choice. This is a state with a team in each of the professional big four leagues, as well as a busy college sporting scene.

Football (NFL)

Football (NFL)

Football is the most popular sport in the USA, and the NFL is represented by the Arizona Cardinals. The Cards have enjoyed a passionate following since moving to the state in 1988. They have reached the Super Bowl just once in that time, losing narrowly to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009.

Fans still flock to the State Farm Stadium, and the games are followed avidly. There is substantial betting interest in every match played in the NFL, helped by the fact that football is a sport that lends itself to in-play wagering, totals and prop bets.

Basketball (NBA)

Basketball (NBA)

Basketball is a sport that lends itself to a host of betting opportunities. The fact that the NBA has massive numbers of fans across the nation ensures there is always a high level of interest in the best hoops action. Arizona fans devote their loyal support to the Phoenix Suns, naturally.

Even though the Suns have never won the NBA Finals, they have been regular contenders. Older fans remember the years when the legendary Charles Barkley was in the line-up, but more recent runs to the playoffs have inspired hopes that glory could be around the corner.

Baseball (MLB)

Baseball (MLB)

Major League Baseball doesn’t have a long history in the Grand Canyon State. The Arizona Diamondbacks began playing here as recently as 1988. However, they became the first pro team to win a national title for Arizona when they won the World Series just three seasons later – a feat that made them the fastest expansion team to win the Fall Classic.

The D-backs still command huge support in the state, and the length of the baseball season ensures that the sport enjoys a high level of wagering interest throughout.

Hockey (NHL)

Hockey (NHL)

In a list of states where you would not expect to find a hockey team, Arizona would surely be extremely close to the top. However, the Winnipeg Jets franchise moved south to become the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996 and since 2014 the team has been known as the Arizona Coyotes.

This is the oldest franchise never to play in the Stanley Cup finals – even during a stint when Wayne Gretzky was part-owner – and the team has won only one divisional championship, in 2011-12. Hockey is a sport with a steady level of wagering interest across the nation.

NCAA Football

NCAA Football

College football attracts massive interest across the USA, and Arizona has two teams that command significant support. The Arizona Wildcats and the Arizona State Sun Devils both play in the Pac-12, the FBS conference in this part of the nation. This is the highest level of college football.

However, there are significant restrictions on wagering on college sports. Live betting is forbidden, and prop bets – even those placed pre-match – on individual athletes’ performances may not be struck. You can, though, place a pre-game prop relating to a team’s chances.

NCAA Basketball

NCAA Basketball

Despite the presence of teams in all the big four leagues, many would argue that the biggest team in this state is the University of Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team. This is a program with a long record of success at the highest level, winning the NCAA Tournament in 1997 and reaching the Final Four and Elite Eight on numerous occasions.

It’s a pity, therefore, that wagering on the Wildcats is restricted. You cannot place in-play wagers on college sports in Arizona, and no prop bets are allowed on individual athletes before or during the action.

Golf

Golf

The level of betting on golf has increased in recent years. Sportsbooks’ ability to update odds instantly has led to a rise in in-play betting – and there are plenty of ways to wager on golf. There are tournaments all year round that last for days and attract huge fields.

Arizona loves its golf, with 300 courses across the state, and TPC Scottsdale hosts sizeable crowds for the Phoenix Open early every year. There are even hopes that the Grand Canyon State might play host to a Major championship one day soon now that the PGA has moved to a cooler time of year.

NASCAR

NASCAR

NASCAR is the top level of motorsport in the USA and it attracts serious support throughout the calendar. Arizona fans have a venue on their doorstep, the historic Phoenix Raceway, which draws immense crowds to the various NASCAR weekends staged there. They include two events in the NASCAR Cup series, held in the spring and fall.

Arizona sports betting companies offer markets on all NASCAR meetings and there are plenty of ways in which you can bet on all the races. You will also find opportunities to wager on other major motorsport series such as IndyCar and Formula One.

Horse racing

Horse racing

There are plenty of opportunities to wager on horse racing in Arizona. The Grand Canyon State is home to three tracks. One of them, Turf Paradise, hosts one of the longest meets in the country, which takes place between October and May. There are also races at Arizona Downs and Rillito Park.

Betting on horse racing has been legal since 1935. There are several websites where you can wager online on races held here and across the USA, as well as international meets. These include TVG and TwinSpires – which, of course, also operates a sportsbook.

Enhanced odds
Odds boosts are a regular feature offered by most leading sportsbooks. They will enhance the price about a particular outcome, so that if you place a wager on it your return will be bigger than you expected.
Loyalty offers
There are ways to recognize the loyalty of customers who play with a sportsbook regularly. One is a rewards program, whereby you qualify for extra play or other bonuses – many operators also invite you to join their VIP scheme.

Legal sports betting in Arizona

Efforts to introduce legal sports betting in Arizona began in 2018. That was the year when the US Supreme Court ruled the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was unconstitutional. This decision effectively cleared the way for states to legalize sports betting if they wished.

However, over the next couple of years there was little momentum behind the push for legalization. One stumbling block was the fact that 16 of the recognized 22 tribes in the state operated the state’s 25 casinos.

The key moment came in 2021, when state governor Doug Ducey renegotiated the compact with the tribes to include sports betting. This followed the passage of two bills, HB 2772 and SB 1797, through the state’s legislature.

Under the new law, 20 licenses were made available, 10 to the tribes and 10 for professional sports teams and venues. Ducey signed the law in April 2021, and by September of that year the first legal Arizona sports betting operations were launched.

Within a short space of time, 18 licenses had been issued. The response from sports fans in the state was extraordinary; $1.75billion was wagered in the first four months.

What is the legal sports gambling age in Arizona?

If you want to place a sports bet in Arizona, you will need to be at least 21 years old.

Are Arizona sports betting winnings taxable?

The IRS has long ruled that all forms of gambling winnings represent taxable income. Legal sportsbooks will withhold 25% of any sizeable wins against your next annual federal tax bill – there is also a smaller level of state tax to pay. To ensure you pay the correct amount of tax, it’s advisable to keep a record of all your wins and losses throughout the year.

Is all sports betting legal in Arizona?

In common with sportsbooks in all other states, no operator is allowed to offer markets on political events, including elections.

There are also restrictions on betting on college sports in Arizona. While you can place a pre-game bet, in-play wagers are not allowed, and you may not bet on individual player props. There is also a ban on any wager relating to penalties or injuries.
